The latest economic data published on Monday by the Spanish government’s central statistics unit shows that during the third quarter of this year GDP rose by 0.8 per cent, with the annual growth rate being maintained at 3.1 per cent.

After finally emerging from the crisis this means that the economy of Spain has now been growing for four years, and at a rate of 3 per cent or more for the last two and a half. Even more encouragingly, the latest data include the first month after the disputed Catalan independence referendum was called, and it appears that there was little if any negative effect.

However, in the longer term and as a result of the crisis in Catalunya, the government has already made a downward revision of its growth forecast for 2018, from 2.5 to 2.3 per cent.
