Málaga kicked off its first major Christmas weekend with unseasonably warm weather, bustling streets and record visitor numbers. Temperatures exceeded 20ºC on 6 December, drawing thousands to the city’s promenade, Christmas markets and shopping streets. Both Málaga Airport and María Zambrano station saw a steady flow of arrivals as the long weekend began.

Visitors from across Spain — including a group of friends from Don Benito experiencing Málaga’s Christmas charm for the first time — described the city as “very warm and very crowded.”

Christmas Markets in Full Swing

Crowds made it nearly impossible to move through Calle Larios, while the Sabor a Málaga food fair became one of the weekend’s main attractions. Local businesses reported stronger sales than in previous years.

Shop owners such as Antonio Rojo of Otto London confirmed: “The season has started very well.” Christmas shopping was already in full force.

At the Central Park market, long-time stall owner Paco highlighted the strong demand for traditional shepherd costumes handmade by Loli, who has crafted them for 40 years. Other artisans echoed the positive trend, including Gerda from “Mis Tazas,” who noted “more people than last year.”

Tourists and Locals Alike Embrace the Festive Mood

Visitors crossing the park toward the Sabor a Málaga market encountered dense crowds, but few seemed bothered. Cordoba residents Raquel and Alba laughed: “It’s like every year. We know what we’re coming for.”

At the Porticatero cheese stall, Saray Merchán proudly showcased Yunquera’s famous four-coloured cheeses and spicy varieties, reporting strong early sales.

International tourists also joined the celebrations. Markus and Sabine, visiting from near Berlin where temperatures barely reach 4ºC, praised Málaga’s climate, lights and lifestyle, strolling through the city in shorts.

Restaurants Packed Ahead of the Light Switch-On

Bars and restaurants overflowed with customers, with queues stretching from Casa Aranda across Puerta del Mar and reaching Atarazanas, while La Malagueña saw lines extending to the central market. By 6 p.m., Calle Larios and the Alameda were filled to capacity as people awaited the Christmas light show.

For many, the experience was summed up perfectly:
“Lots of people, very warm, and a great Christmas atmosphere.”
