The late Princess of Wales, Julio Iglesias, the British band Rolling Stones, Antonio Banderas, the Saudi royal family, government heads and ministers have all passed through the luxury establishment’s doors.

After being closed for several years the iconic Hotel Byblos de Mijas will reopen its doors in June 2022, coinciding with the start of the summer high season. And SUR has learned, it will be renamed the La Zambra hotel, while maintaining its luxury category and forming part of the Hyatt chain’s Unbound Collection.

The hotel has been owned by Intriva, a European private equity fund since 2019 and it will be managed by Marugal, a company specialised in the development, launch and operation of unique hotels.

Grand suite

According to the information provided by the owners, La Zambra will have 196 rooms of different categories (double, standard, deluxe golf view, deluxe garden view, junior suite, standard suite and premium suite, as well as a grand suite of 125 square metres), all of them with a terrace and views of the golf course or the mountains.

The hotel offers access to the two golf courses and will include three swimming pools, two tennis courts and two padel courts, a gym, a yoga and Pilates room, as well as a ‘wellness’ health centre with Turkish bath, sauna and hammam. It will also house ten treatment rooms.

In addition, the gastronomic offer at La Zambra will be “flexible and personalised” according to the needs and tastes of the client; and include, at sunset, the rotunda bar, where you can remember the golden years of the Costa del Sol in the 90s.

Princess of Wales

When it was the Hotel Byblos the late Princess of Wales, Julio Iglesias, the British band Rolling Stones, Antonio Banderas, the Saudi royal family, government heads and ministers all passed through the five-star establishment’s doors.

On Wednesday, 17 November, two Mijas councillors visited the hotel to check on the progress of the refurbishment and explained to SUR that although the project has involved a major renovation of the property, an icon of the glamor of the Costa del Sol for decades, both the facade and the most characteristic elements of it are being maintained and restored.

Generate jobs and wealth

“It is a prime project that will generate employment and wealth in our town that is going to reactivate the local and provincial economy as around 200 direct jobs are going to be created as well as all the indirect jobs that are linked to this type of business”, said councillor Andrés Ruiz.
