A popular dessert is the «Roscón de Reyes,» a ring-shaped cake filled with cream and topped with candied fruits, representing the three kings’ crowns. It is customary to hide a small figurine and a dried bean inside the cake, bringing luck to the person who finds the figurine and a duty to pay for next year’s cake to the one who finds the bean. New Year’s Eve, or «Nochevieja,» is a time of celebration and anticipation for the year ahead. Many people choose to celebrate in the bustling city of Malaga or in the beach towns along the Costa del Sol. Public squares and promenades are transformed into vibrant party venues, with live music performances, fireworks, and street festivals.
In Spain, the striking tradition of eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight is observed. Each grape represents good luck for the twelve months of the new year. It requires quick and precise grape consumption as the clock chimes, creating an exciting and joyful atmosphere. After the grapes, people often toast with Cava, a Spanish sparkling wine, and exchange warm wishes and embraces.
Another unique aspect of New Year’s Eve celebrations on the Costa del Sol is the tradition of ‘burning the old year’, where effigies, called «júas,» are created to symbolize the negative aspects of the past year. At midnight, these effigies are set alight in bonfires, representing the collective desire to leave behind any negativity and embrace the start of a fresh chapter.
