Nerja’s Calahonda Beach tops list of Europe’s 14 most original coastal gems
The Costa del Sol continues to shine on the international stage, with Calahonda Beach in Nerja earning the top spot on Jetcost’s ranking of Europe’s most unique beaches. Known for its breathtaking beauty and authentic charm, Calahonda has been recognized as one of the most original and captivating coastal destinations across the continent.

Nestled just below the iconic Balcón de Europa, Calahonda is celebrated for its natural allure, traditional whitewashed houses, and blue-doored boathouses tucked into the cliffs. This 120-metre U-shaped cove features dark sand, moderate waves, and a distinctive stone promenade that adds to its picturesque setting.
Jetcost highlights its appeal for both relaxation and adventure, noting the beach’s crystal-clear waters, abundant marine life, and underwater caves, making it a prime spot for snorkelling and scuba diving. Visitors can expect to see colorful fish, octopus, and starfish in its shallow, transparent waters.
Calahonda stands out as one of only five Spanish beaches featured in the top 14 list, alongside Cala Macarella (Menorca), Playa de las Catedrales (Lugo), Cala del Moraig (Alicante), and Playa de Papagayo (Lanzarote). Other international highlights include Elafonisi in Crete, Cala Mariolu in Sardinia, and Praia da Marinha in Portugal’s Algarve.
With its mix of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and vibrant marine ecosystem, Calahonda Beach reaffirms the Costa del Sol’s reputation as a premier destination for beach lovers across Europe.
