Benalmádena is preparing for a major transformation of its seafront as the Senda Litoral coastal path extends into the town through two landmark projects designed to enhance accessibility and showcase its dramatic coastline.

Work is set to begin in September in Carvajal, where a disused pathway will be upgraded into a nearly 500-metre seaside promenade. The second phase, planned for the Tres Calaveras cliff area, will introduce a striking elevated walkway rising more than four metres above the ground, featuring overhanging sections and panoramic viewpoints. Petal-shaped pergolas will frame one of the most scenic stretches of the Benalmádena coastline.

Mayor Juan Antonio Lara described the initiative as a “turning point” in the configuration of the coastal area, with the goal of creating spaces where residents and visitors can rest, reflect, and fully experience the Mediterranean setting while preserving the natural landscape and iconic cliffs.

The broader plan includes the creation of eight viewpoints along the town’s nine-kilometre coastline, improved accessibility for people with reduced mobility, upgraded railings and urban furniture, sustainable landscaped areas, and designated photo spots. The Virgen del Carmen promenade will also see new shaded pergolas installed before summer to improve comfort.

In addition, the project aims to reconnect the marina with the town centre through the construction of an 85-metre-long wooden footbridge, extending the seafront promenade into the port area and addressing a long-standing urban divide.

The works form part of an eight-million-euro investment package that also includes refurbishment of the nautical centre, modernisation of the harbour master’s building, and construction of a new breakwater. Local authorities say the vision is clear: to revitalise Benalmádena’s coastline and restore its port as an international reference point on the Costa del Sol.
